After establishing residency in the state, you have 45 days in which to register your vehicles and obtain a Nevada driver’s license.
You must provide verification of your social security number (social security card, W-2 form, printed payroll check with name and number, or an old tax form). You must surrender your out-of-state license, take an eye test and written test, and pay $20.50 for your Nevada driver’s license. An additional $3.00 is charged for a motorcycle endorsement.
If you have never been licensed before, have lost your out-of-state license, or your Nevada license expired more than a year ago, you must take a written test, an eye exam, and a driving test. First time applicants must have a certified copy of their birth certificate from the state in which they were born. Photocopies are not acceptable.
There is no grace period in Nevada. If the vehicle is not registered before the expiration date as indicated on the registration receipt from your prior state of residence, penalties will be assessed.
A "smog" emissions check must be done by a Nevada certified emissions control station.
All motor vehicles coming from out of state must have their vehicle identification number physically inspected at the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety.
Needed for Registration
The Nevada license plates issued to you are not transferable to any individual or company other than to your spouse. By law, when you sell a vehicle you must remove your license plates. You may then transfer them to another vehicle belonging to you or your spouse or turn them in to the Department of Motor Vehicles for cancellation.
As a Nevada driver you must maintain Nevada-approved vehicle liability insurance from a Nevada-licensed insurance agent in the amount of $15,000, $30,000, and $10,000 on the vehicles you are operating. Proof of this coverage must be carried in the vehicle.
