Las Vegas boasts professional teams in ice hockey and baseball, many championship boxing matches, world class auto racing at the new Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and NCAA Division One competition in college sports. Las Vegas is the home of the National Finals Rodeo competition and hosts several other rodeo events during the year.
The city and county maintain parks, play grounds, swimming pools, community centers, teen centers, and a park center for the handicapped. Throughout the valley there are facilities for bowling, roller skating, ice skating, tennis, golf, baseball, football, soccer, racquetball, volleyball, swimming, fishing, horseback riding, archery, biking and hiking trails and most other forms of sporting activity.
Southern Nevada is less than a day’s drive from the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, the beaches of Southern California and the ski slopes of Nevada. You can also enjoy sightseeing, hiking, fishing and camping in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.
Can you find water sports in the desert? Absolutely! Just outside Boulder City is a 1.5 million acre recreation area encompassing two lakes – Lake Mead and Lake Mojave. There you’ll find a full range of boating, swimming, and fishing activities, including a trip on an authentic paddle wheel boat and house boats for rent for an on-the-lake vacation. Hiking and camping are also available.
Less than an hour’s drive away, Mt. Charleston offers a cool wooded area in summer for hiking, picnicking, camping, and horseback riding – and in winter it’s the ski area closest to Las Vegas.
Spectacular scenery awaits at these two locations. Located just 20 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area offers both a scenic drive an more than twenty miles of hiking and bicycling trails. At Valley of Fire State Park, fifty-five miles northeast of Las Vegas, you can walk in the footsteps of some of Southern Nevada’s first human inhabitants. Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker People and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers. Hiking, picnicking and camping are also available.
Among the many tourist attractions that can be enjoyed by Las Vegas residents are theme parks and rides at Circus Circus, MGM Grand, and New York New York. Free monorail rides can be found at several locations along the strip. Wet ‘n Wild offers fun in the water. The adventurous can bungee jump, go indoor skydiving, and ride some of the newest and scariest roller coasters in the world.
