Las Vegas Lake Mead
Las Vegas is famous for its nightlife, but it's an incredible destination for outdoor adventure as well. For anyone who enjoys nature and spending time in the outdoors, it can't be beaten.

Lake Mead, one of America's largest lakes and a prime spot for fishing and boating, is less than 30 minutes away and offers endless opportunities for a wild getaway. While you're looking for Las Vegas homes for sale, be sure to set aside some time to explore this spectacular outdoor playground.

Exploring Lake Mead

Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake in the U.S., spanning 247 square miles when it's filled. Created with the construction of the Hoover Dam in 1936, the lake was intended to be a primary water source for the states of Arizona, California, and Nevada as well as a hub for recreation.

The lake is the centerpiece of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which spans nearly 1.5 million acres and includes the entirety of Lake Mead and neighboring Lake Mohave. In addition to water-based recreation, the area offers spectacular desert scenery and hiking trails, as well as guided tours of the iconic Hoover Dam.

Recreation and Relaxation

There are endless ways to spend time on Lake Mead. Whether you have a week to relax and take in the scenery or want to pack as much as you can into a few hours, you'll never run out of options.

  • Boating: From the thrill of the open water to the lake's many secluded bays and coves, boating is one of the biggest attractions at Lake Mead. Numerous marinas and launch ramps along the shoreline make it easy to rent a boat or launch your own. The lake is also open to Jet Skiing, water skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and water sports of all kinds.
  • Fishing: With abundant populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass, walleye, catfish, crappie and striped bass, Lake Mead is a fisherman's dream come true. The three fishing piers located at Hemenway Harbor are great places to start or talk to a local guide about finding the best spots on the water.
  • Swimming: Whether on a secluded beach or from your boat, swimming is always a favorite pastime at Lake Mead. There are no lifeguards or designated swimming areas, so be sure to use caution. Boulder Beach is a popular swimming spot, with a life jacket loaner station on site.
  • Scuba Diving: Lake Mead and nearby Lake Mohave are both among the best lakes in the world for freshwater scuba diving. From the extensive white gypsum reef areas and the unique underwater formations of Cathedral Cove to the remnants of the several towns and villages flooded by the creation of the reservoir, there's a lot to explore beneath the surface.
  • Hiking: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is home to dozens of hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging. Get a spectacular view of the lake from the Historic Railroad Trail, or experience the rugged desert landscape along the Hot Spring Canyon Trail. Winter is a great time to hike if you want to avoid extreme temperatures.
  • Camping: The National Park Service operates ten campgrounds in the Lake Mead area, and several more near Lake Mohave, with beautiful, relaxing accommodations for tents as well as RVs.
