Las Vegas Hiking Red Rock

Las Vegas is famous for its nightlife, but many newcomers are surprised to find that it's also a great place for spending time in the great outdoors. You'll find countless hiking trails, mountain bike paths, rock climbing routes and backcountry camping spots just minutes from Las Vegas.

Our real estate agents are always on the lookout for fun outdoor things to do in the Las Vegas area, and hiking in Red Rock Canyon is one of our absolute favorites.

Red Rock Entrance

Endless Adventure
With crimson canyons, rugged rock formations and bubbling desert springs less than an hour from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon offers a perfect getaway from the city lights. Located within Red Cock Canyon National Conservation Area, the unique landforms of Red Rock Canyon were formed by ancient earthquakes, and by millions of years of weathering and erosion. This stunning landscape spans 200,000 acres and offers endless possibilities for anyone who loves to explore the great outdoors.

See and Explore
Whether you're interested in hiking, rock climbing, or simply want to take a scenic drive, Red Rock Canyon delivers. Here's just a sampling of what you can expect from your visit:

  • Hiking - A wide variety of footpaths are available for hikers of all skill and fitness levels, traversing an incredible variety of scenery and habitats, from stark Mojave desert floor to towering canyon walls and lush desert oases. Trail maps are available at the Red Rock Visitor Center. Some of the best hikes include Pine Creek Canyon, a fairly easy 2-mile hike that passes by an old pioneer homestead, and the challenging Escarpment Trail, which gains 3,000 feet in elevation and provides mesmerizing cliff-top views along its 10-mile course.

  • Rock Climbing - When it comes to rock climbing, it doesn't get much better than Red Rock Canyon. More than 2,000 routes have been established in the canyon's durable Aztec sandstone, with ratings ranging from 5.0 to 5.14, providing ample options for experts and novices alike. You can also talk to the dedicated climbing staff at the Visitor Center to help plan your route.

  • Camping - The campground at Red Rock Canyon is located just off of SR-159, and is open from September 1 to May 30, but is closed during the sweltering summer months. You can choose among more than 70 campsites with incredible wide-open mountain and desert views. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for both tents and RVs.

  • Scenic Drives - The 13-mile loop that meanders through the landscape of Red Rock Canyon is probably the conservation area's most popular feature. Even if you don't have time to take a hike, the scenic drive alone is worth the trip. This route also leads to most of the conservation area's trails, climbing routes, picnic areas, and other attractions.
